FluidPowerNet spoke to Lars Benk, CEO of Schuhmacher Technologies & Hydraulics who shared his thoughts on the effect of the pandemic
Schuhmacher Technologies & Hydraulics like many other businesses had to rely on online communication tools throughout the COVID-19 pandemic to make sure they were still available to their customers.
However, after the initial uncertainty through lockdown in Germany, customer visits were able to take place again after many months, providing hygiene regulations were observed and followed.
“Due to the pandemic we didn’t have a lot of face-to-face meetings, to ensure the health and safety of both our staff and customers. Therefore, we had to use video conferences and online marketing tools for finding customers and to sell our products.
However, if a customer is interested in one of our products, we have to check the situation in the manufacturing plants and often we need a sample of the oil which they are using. COVID-19 has made this process more difficult. Some meetings were really spooky, thousands of square metres of production area, very few employees and only a few machines running. No shaking hands, no coffee and all whilst wearing face protection.
The whole experience for myself and the company was crazy, nobody expected such a situation. Even after the summer holidays (September 2020) there were still a lot of companies in our region trying to bridge the crisis with reduced hours. Improvement is in sight, but the damage to the economy is enormous and has changed many industries.
Let us face the change and pay more attention to our health!”
